SMHA U13-U18 Goaltender Evaluation Information
SMHA COMMON GOALTENDER EVALUATION INFORMATION (September 2024)
Purpose
The intent of a common goalie evaluation is to provide some consistent baseline evaluations for
goalies. This will help zones in the event of a surplus/shortage where goalies are asked to play
for a different zone. This helps ensure a consistent evaluation and hopes to facilitate goalies
playing at the appropriate skill level.
See the U15 skills evaluation schedule below

a. 80+ pucks
b. Bumpers will help to corral pucks.
5. 4 skills stations per session with 3 goalies at each station.

6. Goalies will rotate between each station at scheduled times.
7. Each station will have different drills.
8. Each station will have adequate shooters. Up to 10 shooters on the ice.
9. Goalie evaluators will evaluate the skills session and the ‘U13A/U15A’ scrimmages.
10. Goalies not selected for the ‘A’ scrimmages will scrimmage with their Zone’s B/C teams.
11. Zones will decide how to further evaluate B/C goalies if required. B/C scrimmage goalie
evaluations are out of scope and will be covered by the zones.
12. Zones will be provided the evaluation results for goalies in their ‘U13A’ zone pairings,
and U15A final scores.

Scrimmages

2. Zones are responsible for assigning goalies to U13 scrimmages. U15A scrimmage
teams will be assigned by the U15A committee.
3. Goalies not selected from the ‘A’ scrimmages will scrimmage in the zone’s B/C level
scrimmages.
4. Goalies will try to be assigned to their zone pairing but due to numbers this may not
always be possible. Goalies may be assigned to teams in another zone for the
scrimmage games.
5. Goalies will rotate between teams, first on their own team and then onto the other team.
Time on each team will be balanced as closely as possible.
Evaluation Procedures
1. Evaluation Form: Evaluation forms will be the same as the AA goalie evaluation forms.
2. External evaluators will be selected based on the zone coordinator’s agreement.
3. Minimum of three evaluators for the skills sessions which can consist of on-ice or off-ice evaluators.
4. Minimum of one evaluator for each scrimmage.
5. Goalies evaluated by their jersey number
6. Scoring for skills: 1-10 where 1 is weak and 10 is strong
7. SMHA Goaltending Development Chair collects all evaluation results.
8. Zone coordinators will be required to review the evaluation results for errors.
9. Zone coordinators will be able to review a paper copy of the results.
10. Zone coordinators will be given an electronic copy of results for their goalies.
11. Zones retain control over the goalie draft process and team placement.
12. In the event of injury or illness of a goalie that prevents participation in the evaluation
process, the zone coordinators, along with the SMHA goalie chairperson, will make a
decision on goalie placement based on the goalie’s previous level of play. This must be
a majority decision between the coordinators.
Goalie Placement
Zone goalie coordinators agree that placing goalies at the appropriate skill level is important.
Parents and goalies will be asked about their desire to play in another zone. Situations may
arise when a zone is short or has a surplus of goalies so goalies may be asked if they
are willing to move to play at the appropriate level. Zones shall ensure that they have at least
one goalie per team in A/B/C divisions. If the zone feels that a goalie can be moved to a higher
level, there will be a best effort to move goalies into the appropriate division.
